Magellan: Scout Ship Concept Design

Lately I've been working on concept design for an upcoming, exciting sci-fi TV series entitled Magellan by Duane Brunner along with Leigh James and Paul Bradley.  


Here are some of my scout ship designs for the series along with stunning CG renderings of my design by Leon Maki Maki Kitchlew.

Magellan will go live on Kickstarter n August 9.

This series takes place at some point in the future.  Humans and locis coexist peacefully on Earth (Homo loci evolved from Homo sapiens).  The locis are dying of an unknown disease and a cure has not yet been found.  Peace has been established on Earth but this is not a utopia.  Real threats and dangers exist throughout the galaxy.  Magellan, the most advanced starship in Earth's fleet, manned by humans and locis, represent Earth in a federacy of friendly planets in the Alpha and Beta quadrants.  

Their orders: Keep the peace, help those in need, find a cure for the locis, and explore the vastness of space.....

EUREKA SPRINGS -- The Fayetteville Public Library will host an artist's reception to honor artist Sean Fitzgibbon on Thursday, July 12 at 5:30pm in Walker Community Room for a sneak peak at his upcoming graphic novel "What Follows Is True: The Baker Years," a documentary/ graphic novel set at the Crescent Hotel in Eureka Spring in the 1930s.

Fitzgibbon's current project, "What Follows Is True" is a combination of gallery art and narrative storytelling with a local setting. Focusing on the Norman Baker years (1938-1939) of the Crescent Hotel in Eureka Springs, the artist has been working with writer Kevin Brown to tell the story of these dark years as a documentary graphic novel.

Artist Reception At Fayetteville Public Library

Join artist Sean Fitzgibbon at the Fayetteville Public Library, Thursday, July 12th at 5:30pm in Walker Community Room for an artist reception and sneak peak at his upcoming graphic novel project What Follows Is True: The Baker Years. A documentary graphic novel set in at the Crescent Hotel in Eureka Spring, AR in the 1930s.

Through July 15th, Sean's painting and collage series Altered Perceptions will be featured in the library's Reading Room on the second floor of the library. This series is composed of drawn and painted, interconnected images that explore concepts of mystery and perception incorporating many visuals observed through traveling.

Sean's current project, What Follows Is True is a combination of gallery art and narrative storytelling with a local setting.  Focusing on the Norman Baker years (1938-1939) of the Crescent Hotel in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, Sean has been working with writer Kevin Brown to tell the story of these dark years as a documentary graphic novel.

"I first became interested in this story after visiting the Crescent Hotel and going on their evening ghost tour with my co-writer, Kevin Brown," explains Fitzgibbon.  "The tour guide discussed the ghost sightings that have made the hotel famous, but the most interesting story to us was not the ghosts, rather the story of Norman Baker, a fraudulent "doctor" who turned the hotel into a cancer clinic in the late 1930's."

Fitzgibbon found the story too unbelievable to be true. "Skeptical, I ventured to the local library the next morning and learned that Baker and the cancer hospital were among some of the darkest years in Eureka's history." The two began collaborating ever since, and new fully painted pages and panel sequences will be featured at the reception for the first time. This will be a public sneak peek at the upcoming graphic novel.

"What Follows is True is a marriage of my gallery art and graphic novel illustrations," shared Fitzgibbon. "Using painting and mixed media, Kevin and I are revealing Norman Baker and the Crescent Hotel's story which demonstrates that truth is sometimes stranger than fiction."

Artist Sean Fitzgibbon exhibits work in galleries and art centers throughout the US, recently including solo exhibitions at Pittsburg State University Gallery (Pittsburg, KS), Jasper Community Art Center (Jasper, IN), Old Firehouse Art Center (Longmont, CO) and Illinois Central College (Peoria, IL).  He has illustrated books and teaches at Northwest Arkansas Community College.

Original art and prints will be available for sale at the reception, with 10% of art sales benefiting the Fayetteville Public Library NEH Challenge grant.

Drawing Basics for Kids at NWACCC

Stay cool this summer and draw in the studio.  Next week I'll be teaching Drawing Basics for Kids at NWA Community Creative Center (Nadine Baum Studios).
Ages 10 and up: July 9-13, 9:00-11:30 am


Put the fun in drawing fundamentals through a series of lively and informative drawing exercises.  This class will cover basic techniques for drawing from the imagination and from sight.  Students will draw the basic forms and build from that to create whatever their imaginations can conjure.

Time Lapse Continued

Well, my camera battery ran out so I'm having to recharge in the middle of a job.  Here are some of my preliminary drawings for this time lapse illustration project.  I'm drawing each scene twice.  One image is the template and the other will be final rendering based on the template drawing.  The panoramic scene depicts a downtown square from a 100 year old photo and the other is the same scene taken from the same angle as it is today.

Recently I've been working with a documentary film crew doing a series of time lapse illustrations for the opening sequence of an upcoming film. The overhead mounted camera records my renderings using stop motion image capture software.  The image will come to life merging with moving imagery.  The trick is to keep the rendering on registration working fairly quickly until the scene is complete (and making sure our cat doesn't jump up on the work surface).  Thanks to Hayot and Larry.


This film is scheduled to premiere in October.  I'll be sure to remind you again before the release date.

What may appear to be my most boring post yet is actually a really great art resource I was introduced to recently.  If you work with color (in any way), check out the site Kuler by Adobe. This web-hosted application is great for generating color themes for your projects, whether it be art, design, home or web.  I've been using it quite a bit lately, and it also works well for experimenting and sharing your color variations and themes.
